Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur is first mentioned in Geoffrey of Monmouth's The History of the Kings of Britain (1136) and evokes scenes of the Sword in the Stone, the Lady of the Lake and Camelot.

According to this account, King Arthur gets a sword called "Caliburn," which was made on the Isle of Avalon. Later legends have the sword being returned to the Lady of the Lake on the mortal wounding of King Arthur at Camlann.

It was not until Robert de Boron wrote Merlin (c.1200) that the author introduced the story of the young King Arthur drawing the sword Excalibur from a rock therby proving that he was the rightful king of Britain, the true heir of Uther Pendragon. However, in what is sometimes called the Post-Vulgate Merlin, Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake sometime after he began to reign. She calls the sword "Excalibur, that is as to say as Cut-steel."

The graceful lines of this piece by Gladius fit the image of the warrior king of the Briton and with its silver and gold hilt and stainless steel blade, Excalibur is a superb decorative sword.
