Maximilian I 1459 – 1519 was King of the Romans (also King of the Germans) and Holy Roman Emperor from 1493 until his death. Maximilian had a great passion for armour, not only as equipment for battle or tournaments, but as an art form. The style of armour that became popular during the second half of his reign featured elaborate fluting and metalworking, and became known as Maximilian armour.
This sword is named after the First Battle of Guinegate which took place on August 7, 1479. French troops of King Louis XI were defeated by the Burgundians led by Maximilian who at one point during the battle fought from the first rank of an infantry square, one of the most vulnerable and dangerous positions. While it was not unheard of for some poorer nobles to do this, the fact that such a prominent official as the Maximillian was himself doing this was unheard of.
Maximillian’s original sword was photographed at an auction and this is a replica of that sword. The blade is hand-forged of high-carbon steel. Pommel and guard are beautifully finished brass, gorgeously setting off the bone grip, a very beautiful sword. Comes with a leather scabbard.
