This 32 page guide gives a short account of the infamous instruments of torture kept in the Royal Armouries’ collections as well as the history of the punishment and executions carried out within the Tower of London as well as details on the implements used.
Within this book, there are examples of inscriptions set within the tower walls that were created by prisoners who were held within them.
These range from Ambrose Rookewoode who was a conspirator within the Gunpowder Plot to the religious markings of many anonymous Catholic prisoners.
The guide also includes information on some of the most gruesome items within the Royal Armouries’ collection including a ‘Gossip’s Bridle’ and ‘Thumbscrews’ which were used on a range of offenders.
