This is based on the close helmet, the most popular head defence in northern Europe for men-at-arms from the early 16th century until complete armour ceased to be worn on the battlefield in the mid 17th century.

The visor and bevor, the plates at the front for the helmet, were all pivoted at the temple allowing it to open and close so the wearer could put it on.
