The basinet replaced the great helm as the battlefield helmet of choice for the man-at-arms from the middle of the 14th century until the early 15th.

This one, a visored 'hounskull' or 'pig-faced' basinet, is based on a superb example from the ancient family armoury at Churburg in the Italian Tirol, presented to the Royal Armouries by Sir Archibald Lyle in memory of his two sons who were killed during World War II.
